If you can’t find an NHS dentist, you still have good options. If you’re in pain, get urgent help first. Then here’s what to do next, what each option costs, and how to be seen sooner.
In pain or need help now?
Use NHS 111 (call 111 or go to 111.nhs.uk) or contact a dentist. You do not need to be registered with a dentist to get urgent help.
Go to A&E or call 999 if you have severe swelling of your mouth, lips, throat or neck and are having difficulty breathing or opening one or both eyes, or a head or face injury that caused you to lose consciousness, vomit or have double vision. Do not drive yourself.
Your options, in order
- Keep trying for NHS care. Call several practices, ask about waiting lists, and search beyond your nearest town. How to find an NHS dentist taking new patients.
- For urgent problems, use NHS 111, even if you aren’t registered anywhere.
- For routine care, consider a private dentist. You can stay on an NHS waiting list at the same time.
- Spread the cost with a practice payment plan, insurance or finance if you need it.
